Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC) is the participatory arts theater program of the Northwestern Settlement, which has served Chicago’s West Town neighborhood as an independent, social service non-profit organization for 128 years. Along with ASC, the Settlement serves more than 30,000 neighbors every year through a K-8 charter school, an early childhood education center, a food pantry, a residential STEM camp, a youth and family counseling center, and AmeriCorps Project YES!.
ASC, a leading professional theatre for young audiences (TYA) and families in the Midwest, has created critically-acclaimed productions of original and canonical TYA works for 15 years. ASC is the only professional theater in the region that creates work exclusively for middle school-aged youth and the adults in their lives. Our artistic mission is to create and tell heroic stories about young people. As a program of the Settlement, our similarly important social mission is to nurture, educate, and inspire our neighbors. As such, in 2012 ASC established a new play development program, Community Crossings. This unique blend of storytelling, focus groups, and interviews encourages local youth and families to share their experiences, challenges, hopes, fears, and aspirations.
With artistically excellent productions that promote the values of critical literacy, social justice, creativity and imagination, we have reached hundreds of thousands of school-age Chicago youth.
